There are two main bays at the head of Estero Canalà. We chose the northern one whose navigation seems more straightforward. We ran along the beach all the way to a passage which leads to a small estuary but found no safe place to anchor as the shelving is too steep. On the north corner of the beach, behind the mouths of two small rivers, we found a cove with 10 m of depth, perfect for two lines ashore. Our first lines ashore maneuver went well, largely helped by the fact that the wind and current were down to null.
On shore, there is a small hut where the tree line and the main stream intersect. It is home to Cristian, who takes care of the property and the cows for the owner of the land. He has been Living there alone for the last three years with three dogs and a few chickens as only company. He has a small wooden boat, but when he visits us in the morning to collect the fruit I promised him, he does not come on board, as he is afraid it will sink if he stops bailing it! His accent is thick and we only catch half of what he tells us, but we understand that the last time the owner came for a visit was a year ago; He left him a satellite phone but does not charge it with credit. He at least owns a radio and can get the local news and weather daily.
Cristian offers to guide us through the estuary and through the bushes to the local trout fishing spot and shows off his skills. He uses a short piece of large PVC piping to roll his nylon line on, attaching it to a hook and bolt used for weight. He is armed with a fairy liquid container in which he holds a few worms he uses to thread onto his hook. The preparation to throw resembles the motion of a lasso circling, and we are amazed by the distance the lure covers! That days we catch a few Robalos and small trouts, but keep none as they are too small. We spot a few big trouts but they out-smart us.
In the afternoon, we run up the small Northern most river arm with the dinghy, then walk a stream filled with dead fallen logs to a waterfall and large water hole where we enjoy a long awaited bath.
